Job Description

Senior Underwriter – Contract Surety

Location: Remote (Midwest Territory – Kansas City region focus)
Employment Type: Full-Time

Why This Role Is Different

This isn’t a back-office underwriting role.

You’ll own a defined territory, manage an established book of business, and work directly with agents and principals to drive smart, profitable growth. There’s real autonomy here—along with the expectation that you know how to use it.

If you enjoy underwriting with judgment, not just checklists, this role gives you that space.

About the Company

Our client is a well-respected organization within the surety space, known for long-standing agency relationships, strong underwriting discipline, and a stable, collaborative culture. They’ve built their reputation on consistency, partnership, and thoughtful growth—not short-term wins.

Role Overview

This role is responsible for underwriting both new and renewal contract surety business within an assigned territory. You’ll evaluate risk, make decisions within your authority, and partner closely with agents to maintain and expand the portfolio.

This is a relationship-driven underwriting role with a mix of:

  • Portfolio management
  • New business development
  • Field engagement

What You’ll Actually Do

  • Underwrite new and renewal contract surety accounts within your territory
  • Analyze financials and assess risk to support sound underwriting decisions
  • Manage a portfolio with a focus on profitability and long-term growth
  • Operate within your authority and escalate complex risks as needed
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with agents, brokers, and principals
  • Travel within the territory for agency and client meetings
  • Support and mentor less experienced underwriters when appropriate

What They’re Looking For

  • 3+ years of contract surety underwriting experience (or equivalent industry experience)
  • Strong financial analysis and risk assessment skills
  • Ability to manage a territory independently
  • Relationship-driven mindset with strong communication skills
  • Comfortable working in a role that blends underwriting and business development

Note: Candidates with deeper experience may be considered for expanded authority or level.

Work Environment

  • Fully remote, work-from-home
  • Regular travel within the Midwest territory (primarily Kansas City region)
  • Occasional travel for team meetings, training, or company events

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: ~$85,000 – $115,000 (based on experience and level)
  • Comprehensive benefits package including:
    • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
    • 401(k) with company match
    • Paid time off
    • Bonus eligibility
    • Additional wellness and support programs
